The fashion design school FIT and publication Complex are teaming up to create a sneaker-focused fashion design course

The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally recognized college for fashion and design headquartered in New York City, has entered into a savvy partnership with Complex, the renowned publication for all things music, style, entertainment, sports and sneakers. Together, the two entities have designed an online course geared toward teach the fundamentals of sneaker design to aspiring fashion designers.

This partnership will use Qubed Education to power their brain child. Qubed is a technology startup based in New York that worked with FIT before to create an online beauty class with partner Allure.

“There’s clearly this huge amount of passion for streetwear, and sneakers have gone very much more mainstream,” Rob Kingyens, president and CEO of Qubed, told Glossy.co. “There are even luxury brands like Louis Vuitton that are creating their own [collaborations]. We’re at an inflection point of sneakers being adopted by everyone and becoming a fashion statement.”

Kingyen’s statement couldn’t be more spot-on, as the sneaker market is currently valued at a whopping $55 billion. Millennial demand for comfortable, aesthetic shoes for everyday wear is the driving source behind the company’s growth. They account for $21 billion a year spent on sneakers, a number that’s expected to grow in the coming years.

Shoe design is already a large part of the FIT curriculum, and this new online course will become a part of the core degree program, offering a more in-depth study of one of the most popular types of shoes on the market.

“Sneakers are a hot topic,” Sarah Mullins, head of FIT’s accessories design program also told Glossy.co. “It’s definitely a huge industry, and delivering things like this online course is a new trend in education.”

FIT tries to keep its course prices considerably cheaper than what you’d see in traditional fashion design, so although the price for the course has yet to be announced, it’s expected to fall between $500 and $750.

This anticipated price encompasses all the costs of creation (coding, design, security features like intrusion prevention, course upkeep, etc.), instruction and the royalties that will be split between FIT and Complex. Qubed’s specialty in creative fields also drives the costs down.

“A big part of our mission is to make education and top-tier education accessible, and because of that, we make our programs 100% available online,” Kingyen said. “Anyone anywhere can be on them. We don’t create hurdles to getting accepted.”

They’re hoping to make fashion design, particularly in shoes, a more viable career for those interested in the market.

“People understand fashion, beauty and sneakers from a cursory level, but not how to take that passion and make it a career path. We see this as a prime area within a massive industry,” Kingyen continued.

According to Kingyen, they’d like to target a younger audience, such as high school students, young professionals switching careers and university dropouts.

“We expect a pretty wide range, but the commonality with all those groups is that our students have identified they want to do something they love. And they’re trying to figure out, with their time, schedule and finances, the best way to understand the industry,” Kingyen said.
