The Ida chatbot aims to reach users where they are and help them volunteer or donate to the causes they care about, effectively turning words into action

Conversational AI is becoming increasingly common on different interfaces for an ever-expanding variety of purposes. Lately the buzz around chatbots has focused on their use in customer service, particularly within the retail industry. However, a new application for them is in the non-profit and charitable sector. In the midst of today’s increasingly contentious social and political climates, there is no shortage of causes in need of support, and now a special bot aims to link people with opportunities to offer their aid.

Ida is the do-gooder chatbot that will instantly connect people to aid-providing organizations based on their interests and preferences. The Facebook Messenger bot is the fruit of a collaboration between agency BBDO and Idealist, a platform that connects people with volunteer and job opportunities at non-profits.

To use the chatbot, users simply open their mobile messenger service, search for Ida, and then proceed through questions regarding their interests, location and their preferred method of providing aid, such as volunteering or donating. Ida will then provide them with a list of opportunities to choose from.

“Chat is an interesting medium because it’s ubiquitous; you can do it on your phone at any time. This is the way people are communicating now, and it can enable you to access resources quickly and efficiently,” BBDO senior creative director Joyce Pedretti told PSFK in a podcast interview on conversational interfaces. “When reading an article that might make you impassioned, Ida gives you a resource to tap into that can allow you to do some good in a few minutes, rather than just comment.”

In other words, Ida aims to turn engagement into action, empowering people to actualize their intentions of doing good by taking advantage of applications that people are already using. The creators of Ida hope that the bot’s service will revolutionize how people donate and make charity and volunteering a habitual practice by integrating it into the modern lifestyle.
