Soccer Wearable Makes Professional Analytics Possible For Anyone
Catapult has launched its PlayerTek technology in US stores to help give all athletes personalized fitness data and training plans
Melbourne-based sports performance analytics company Catapult has launched PlayerTek, a new device that allows soccer players and coaches to measure performance metrics and improve their training plans.
PlayerTek has smart sensors and an advanced GPS to track metrics like distance, top speed, sprint distance and the number of sprints with 2,500 measurements per second. For coaches, this kind of information is extremely helpful for scouting, weekly training, deciding which players need rest, forming strategies and making sure the team is energized before an important match.
Players simply attach the device to a fitted lycra garment that can be worn over any shirt or jersey. PlayerTek takes an accurate measurement of position and movement, then syncs wirelessly to an app on the player’s mobile device for review of the data in the form of numbers, charts and heat maps. Players also have the ability to benchmark and compare their data with teammates and professional athletes.
“In soccer today, like in every other sport, increasingly fine margins make the difference between winning and losing. PlayerTek is a game-changer for soccer players who want to understand exactly where they need to improve and help their team become more successful,” said Benoit Simeray, Catapult CEO of Consumer in the company’s press release.
In the past, the company has worked with professional soccer clubs around the world including Chelsea, Brazil and the Los Angeles Galaxy to test and develop their technology. This latest release is designed to make that technology more accessible to all levels of players and teams with a lower price point of $199.
To date, Catapult products have been used by over 1,500 teams in 35 sports, including professional basketball. “Anything that makes us smarter about our players’ health is a win for us. Catapult certainly has helped,” says Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban in a testimonial. “Data acquisition is critical to being proactive with every element of player health and performance, and Catapult is a key product for us in that area.”
PlayerTek is currently available in b8ta stores in Austin, Houston and Santa Monica with more locations to follow.
