Human-to-machine programming is becoming increasingly prescient thanks to emotionally sensitive technologies that can decipher users’ behavior, desires and needs. Advances in machine learning and neuroscience enable individuals to gain more insight into their everyday mental bandwidth or acuity.

R&D engineers and researchers are able to leverage this same technology to measure the biometric responses of consumers and beta testers, helping inform better product design. PSFK researchers looked into four ways of implementing emotional tracking to help developers and consumers alike better understand human behavior:

mPath
MIT Media Lab spin-off mPath is developing its MOXO sensor technology to help companies understand their customers’ emotions and increase potential for innovation. Using wearable stress sensors, analytics and other technologies, mPath is able to pinpoint the exact moment consumers experience their reaction to products to paint an accurate picture of consumers’ responses to specific stimuli.

American artist Lauren McCarthy created a project called us+, a video-chat app that uses audio, facial expression and linguistic analysis to optimize conversations based on the Linguistic Inquiry Word Count (LIWC) database and the concept of Linguistic Style Matching (LSM). Participants can see real-time analysis when the person expresses positivity, self-absorption, temerity, aggression and honesty.

Emotiv
EMOTIV is a bioinformatics company advancing understanding of the human brain using electroencephalography (EEG). The platform aims to track cognitive performance, monitor emotions and control both virtual and physical objects via machine learning of trained mental commands.

NeuroSky
NeuroSky markets various brain activity-tracking wearables directly to consumers. Its headsets can be used with a number of apps to harness EEG signals to let users play games, reduce stress, increase attention and even help with learning. The determination of attentive and meditative states is done by monitoring several bands at once and is carried out by NeuroSky’s proprietary algorithms embedded in the headset’s signal-processing software.
