A Sydney cafe owner created his own facial recognition system, aimed at small businesses, for more personalized service

In a quest for a more personalized relationship with his customers— simply put, remembering their names, Geoff Cropley, owner of Bahista Cafe in Sydney, Australia, decided to use facial recognition technology. After quickly learning there were only enterprise solutions, for enterprise budgets, he wound up creating his own technology with the help of developer John Maclean. It took two years and a failed prototype, but eventually, NoahFace was born.

“I thought I could use my human brain and I failed miserably. I searched the world for a low-cost face recognition [system] and there was nothing out there, all the solutions were multimillion-dollar ones. So I went about creating what we have today.” Cropley told The Sydney Morning Herald. “Customers overwhelmingly love it. They say they come to the cafe because it is so personal.”

Currently, NoahFace is the only the beginning of facial recognition technology for small businesses. The system has evolved to cater to cafes, membership clubs, and employee time and attendance. It also includes a built-in loyalty program, POS integration and daily promotions. NoahFace has received $1 million in funding, and since the technology was deployed in his cafe, Cropley says business is up by 37%.
