Sustainable water product company Soma partnered with Parley for the Oceans, a global network fighting ocean pollution, to create the a glass water bottle with a sleeve made from Parley Ocean Plastic—a material created from upcycled plastic intercepted from marine environments. The limited-edition product is being sold exclusively at Starbucks.

The sleeve is part of an initiative to reduce the amount of plastic that gets thrown into the ocean. Americans throw out over 30 million plastic water bottles every year, which end up in landfills and oceans. Each sleeve from the Soma x Parley bottle is made out of two plastic ones that have been picked up from remote islands and coastal waters.

The new bottle meets two goals: recycling plastic from the ocean and encouraging consumers to refill the reusable bottle instead of purchasing new plastic ones. It’s just a start, but with bottles being sold in 5,000 Starbucks locations across the US and Canada, the Soma and Parley project is about bringing awareness to the fact that there is still much to be done.

“Plastic is a design flaw. We cannot fix it overnight, but we can all take steps to create change,” Cyrill Gutsch, founder of Parley for the Oceans, said in a statement. “Shifting mindsets and behaviors is as important as creating new systems and materials. We all have a role to play. This bottle is another reminder of that fact and the beginning of a new collaboration in the movement for solutions.”

The Soma x Parley water bottle sells for $29.95. A percentage of each sale goes to support initiatives of the Parley Ocean Plastic Program and the implementation of the Parley AIR Strategy to avoid, intercept and redesign plastic.
