In Brief

Customers can point their phones at designated spots in-store and online to activate augmented reality views of models sporting Zara products, and click through to buy

Clothing and accessories brand Zara recently released a mobile app that uses augmented reality technology to give users a novel shopping experience. After downloading the Zara AR app from iTunes or Google Play, users point their phones at designated areas like shop windows, in-store podiums, boxes from online purchases and even images on Zara’s site to view AR content of models sporting items for sale. Shoppers can then simply click through the app to purchase any items they like.

This new way to shop is not the first that Zara has debuted. Lately the retailer has been bringing digital elements into its physical shopping experience, like its incorporation of interactive mirrors and instant payments into a London pop-up store. What’s unique about the AR app, however, is its potential to do away with the need for in-store mannequins, instead letting shoppers experience clothes virtually on moving models, functioning almost like fashion show and providing consumers with a more dynamic way to shop.
