Star Wars Game Unfolds In AR, No Headset Required
Disney is taking advantage of Apple's ARKit to encourage a wider adoption of augmented reality entertainment
Disney has introduced augmented reality Holochess, the Star Wars version of the classic strategy game, for all devices using iOS 11. No headset is required to play the game; instead, it takes advantage of Apple’s ARKit technology. This release is the media conglomerate’s latest step in an initiative to spread the adoption of AR technology.
Last year, a partnership with Chinese technology company Lenovo resulted in the creation of a reasonably-priced AR headset for Dinsey’s Star Wars: Jedi Challenges game. This allowed for a completely interactive gaming experience that didn’t require a significant investment on the part of players. With the new installment of Holochess, which can be found in the App Store as a free update to Jedi Challenges, even more gamers will be able to enjoy the magic of AR. Holochess includes six planets and eight unlockable characters across 18 levels of play, and is currently the only part of the game that’s accessible without a headset.
