Hypermarket Chain Can Deliver In-Store Orders Within One Hour
China's RT-Mart grocery chain is offering delivery in as fast as one hour to shoppers who live within a three-mile radius of one of its 100 stores
Online shopping changed the way brick-and-mortar stores entice customers. Chinese grocery chain RT-Mart has begun a makeover of its stores using ‘New Retail’ technology from Alibaba Group. Beginning with 100 of its 400 locations, RT-Mart has added new features including online order fulfillment, special shopping areas for new mothers and specially curated product offerings from Alibaba’s Tmall.
The most interesting feature, however, involves the store’s same-day delivery service. Shoppers use a mobile app to scan items as they walk through the store, placing them in a virtual shopping cart. When they’re finished, they can pay for the items with Alibaba’s Alipay payment system and receive the delivery at home in as little as 60 minutes.
The one-hour delivery is offered for shoppers who live within a three-mile radius of the RT-Mart location. The orders are fulfilled from the store with the items being placed on a conveyor belt and sent out to a staging area for delivery.
The delivery capabilities are incredibly helpful for customers who are either in-store or placing the order from home. With fulfillment giants (like Amazon in the U.S.) increasingly getting involved in grocery delivery, RT Mart is taking advantage of Alibaba’s infrastructure to keep pace.
