Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba collaborated with sporting goods retailer Intersport on a ‘retail megastore’ that offers in-store technologies from Alibaba’s Tmall. The store, which is located in Beijing’s Qianmen district, incorporates an interactive window display that recognizes the gender and age of passersby to tailor highlighted products to them. Inside, customers can play an AR basketball game or try on items in front of a mirror equipped with an AI shopping assistant that recommends additional purchases.

The experience intends to bridge the online and offline divide. As shoppers walk through the retail space, they can scan QR codes with a smartphone to place items in a virtual shopping bag, where they are free to make purchasing decisions even after leaving the store. The responsive features will also help Tmall and Intersport collect data to gain a better understanding of its customers’ preferences.

“We are excited to see an extensive range of Tmall’s New Retail technologies and features under one roof in Intersport’s store,” president of Tmall fashion and luxury Jessica Liu told The Drum. “What’s even more encouraging is to see our merchants embracing the New Retail concept and exploring its potential. When customers try out these features firsthand, we are confident that they will see the convergence of online and offline shopping as the future of retail.”
