Amazon Prime Day, the 36-hour buying period where shoppers can score the best deals of the year, is upon us. While this annual event universally is celebrated, this year’s Prime Day is unique for Indian shoppers.

Last week, Amazon installed a plethora of virtual reality kiosks in 10 malls around India. These activations invite consumers to experience Amazon products as they would in their own homes throughout the purchase process. Using an Oculus Rift virtual reality system, shoppers are able to browse some of Amazon’s featured brands and promotions during a hot air balloon ride before landing in a park. The consumer then is able to walk through various virtual household rooms that reflect the Amazon store’s current category offerings.

Using Oculus Touch devices, participants can browse the Bath & Beauty, Kitchen & Dining, Fashion and Prime Video departments in addition to a tech-focused Living Room and a toy-focused Kids Playroom. These spaces enable shoppers to truly experience products as they would in physical reality—whether that be in a virtual living room when browsing a home goods department or in a brick-and-mortar clothing store when sorting through the fashion section. Participants can even look inside a refrigerator and a washing machine, handle Nerf Zombie Survival system toys and browse the cereal selection during their virtual Amazon shopping experience.

The retailer has a reputation for providing Prime shoppers with an unsurpassed commercial shopping experience: wide product selection, unmatchable prices, free 2-day shipping and attentive customer service. However, in the post-digital age, shoppers increasingly buy into brands rather than solely into bargain prices. By providing consumers with organic shopping and product usage experiences, buyers can literally picture themselves using the merchandise in the post-purchase phase. This enables shoppers to cultivate emotional bonds to the products offered and further inclines them to close the sale.

Amazon’s enhancement of the customer journey alleviates consumer pain points that could otherwise lead to buyer’s remorse. A potential buyer no longer needs to worry about purchasing a particular couch or dress only to return due to an insufficient online experience, thanks to virtual product trials that improve the pre-purchase experience. As consumers increasingly shop where they hang out,  Amazon enables its Prime members to hang out where they shop, giving its shoppers optimized, immersive, on-demand service.
