Social Commerce Platform Offers Consumers Customized Shopping

Dote lures in Generation Z apparel consumers through its Instagram influencer network and highly-curated buying experience, taking social shopping to the next level

Dote, a mobile shopping and social media app, created a one-stop shopping experience for Generation Z consumers. Unlike prior generations of fashion customers, this age demographic draws its style inspiration from YouTube videos and Instagram feeds rather than magazines and store catalogs.

To create an optimal buying experience, the app allows shoppers to add items to their shopping carts from over 140 retailers after registering for an account. The app then sends the buyer’s order to the individual retailers for processing and shipping. For this cohort of fickle consumers, Dote curates a custom selection of product offerings based on a shopper’s previously-documented taste preferences. The app also offers a rewards system that allows users to unlock benefits such as free shipping, discounts, giveaways and a chance to be featured on Dote’s Instagram page.

Dote ultimately functions as a social app for shoppers, differentiating itself from its competitors. Users can take polls and quizzes while they browse the available merchandise. The platform is a home for content curation with a whole host of social media influencers who act as brand ambassadors. If these high-profile users tag @doteshopping in an Instagram post, it will appear on their Dote feeds, luring in teenage shoppers with further style inspiration.

Lauren Farleigh, CEO and Founder of Dote, further explains the intended user experience for Dote shoppers: “We’re creating a platform where it’s not just about a purchase, it’s really about the community. Even if you don’t buy today, you can come back, you can take a fun quiz, you can explore the shoppable Instagram, enter a giveaway and really still be part of that world and community. I think that’s a good reason why we see this super sticky engagement and retention numbers.”

In addition to the in-app experience, users also can engage with the Dote community on the “Dote Daily Live” Instagram live stream, when the app’s employees go live to share their outfits of the day. By creating a multi-channel shopping experience, Dote allows Generation Z consumers to engage with their idols through a personalized shopping experience.
