Disney Parks Gamifies Waiting In Line For Its Rides
Play Disney Parks is making waiting in line part of the ride, letting people interact with one another and engage with the ride they're waiting for in augmented reality games
Disney is using a new app to take the boredom out of waiting in line for rides at its parks and upping the family fun that the corporation is known for. Play Disney Parks is a free app that allows families to play games together and interact with their surroundings while they queue.
The app uses Bluetooth technology to generate clues in the game and can be used to prompt events off users’ phone screens. The games capabilities include flying rockets at Space Mountain and seeing Tinkerbell appear in a lantern at Peter Pan’s Flight. Play Disney Parks will also tailor the story of the game play to visitors’ time in line, so they never get short-changed on a game.
This app enhances the Disney park adventure by integrating waiting into the experience, using AR to help make the entire visit immersive rather than simply distract or preoccupy people. To top it off, the games encourage visitors to play with those around them, giving them an interactive and social activity to elevate their Disney experience.
