Sip of Hope offers coffee, tea and a friendly staff trained in Mental Health First Aid, providing the local community with support and resources in a relaxing environment
The United States has been undergoing a crisis regarding mental health and suicide prevention. The high-profile suicide cases of Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade have called to attention the fact that suicide is on the rise in the U.S. Chicago-based Sip of Hope wants to provide support for the problem by offering mental health counseling along with a cup of coffee.
The coffee shop is run by charitable organization, Hope for the Day, and 100% of proceeds will go back to the charity. All the employees in the shop have been certified in Mental Health First Aid so they are qualified to dispense advice.
The mission of Sip of Hope is to create conversation: “The biggest obstacle to preventing suicide is silence. We as a community can start the conversation about mental health, we are in this together.” The model of the coffee shop creates a relaxed space where people who are suffering can find someone to talk to, functioning as a coffee shop as well as community support in a time of need. Sip of Hope is currently open in Chicago.
