In order to retain a strong workforce in an ultra-tight labor market, companies are designing and executing experiences that give them a competitive advantage in recruitment and retention. In particular, businesses of all sizes are increasingly implementing immersive education to conduct employee training, making the process more efficient and hands-on.

Integrating the latest technology into the job training allows for entertaining job-related simulations that better prepare new workers for situations they’ll encounter on a day-to-day basis. Here’s how four major brands are harnessing immersive education to augment not only the employee experience but also, thereby, the efficiency and effectiveness of their business:

KFC
Quick service restaurant KFC is incorporating VR into its employee training program to show new hires how to make its Original Recipe fried chicken. After donning Oculus Rift headsets, employees are immersed in a virtual escape room, which they cannot escape until they have virtually mastered the five-step fried chicken cooking process. KFC noted that this exercise takes workers 10 minutes to learn virtually, verses the 25 minutes it takes in real life.

UPS
Delivery company UPS is using VR headsets to train student delivery drivers. The headsets realistically simulate the experience of driving on city streets, teaching new drivers to spot and identify potential road hazards, such as pedestrians and parked cars.

Home Depot
Home improvement retailer Home Depot is using a mobile app to enhance its on-boarding experience. PocketGuide uses gamified learning activities to help new associates familiarize themselves with the store’s aisles and products, significantly reducing backroom training.

Estée Lauder
Cosmetics company Estée Lauder is testing an AR app for employee training. The interactive technology allows the company to hold live monthly training sessions with its sales associates around world, sharing information about a new product or demonstrating step-by-step instructions for a certain makeup look. Those watching will be able to ask questions and virtually try on the looks for themselves.

Marshaling training experiences in virtual and engaging formats, companies hope to foster a deeper engagement between new workers and their job, helping them acclimate more efficiently while improving the business’ workflow.
