The ride-sharing service wants to draw attention to the reduced cost of using its services over owning a car, offering participants $550 in credit and encouraging social media shares

The fastest-growing ride-sharing service, Lyft, is offering 100 citizens of Chicago $550 to ditch their car for a month to promote several community companies as a cheaper means of travel. Chicago residents interested in entering their names to this promotion, called Ditch With Lyft, just need to apply and prove that they own a car.

The $550 will be divvied up between four transit services: Lyft, Zipcar, the local bike-sharing platform Divvy, and the L train and bus line. Lyft will interview its 100 riders before and after the 30 days are over to determine the program’s success, and is also encouraging participants to share about their experience on social media outlets.

After Chicago, Lyft plans to expand this program around the country, with Portland, Oregon slated as its next destination. The hope of this 30-day car cleanse is to bring attention to the more ecological and economical alternatives to car owning that Lyft offers.
