McDonald’s Lets Consumers Redeem MacCoins For A Free Big Mac

The international fast-food retailer created MacCoin giveaways in honor of the Big Mac's 50th, letting consumers exchange the currency for the iconic burger in participating countries

In celebration of its Big Mac’s 50th anniversary, McDonald’s is releasing a new convenience food currency: the MacCoin. Starting on August 2, burger lovers can obtain this limited-edition currency from McDonald’s locations worldwide. Through the distribution of the fast-food currency, McDonald’s aims to address its global community while simultaneously catering to local markets. The MacCoins feature five unique designs, each representing a decade since the Big Mac’s initial launch. Each individual coin depicts a representation of the pop culture of its era, while all coins display a celebratory image for the 50th anniversary of the iconic burger.

The MacCoin representing the 70s embodies the era’s “flower power’” while the 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s MacCoins depict pop-art, abstract shapes, technological innovation and the evolution of communication, respectively. The coins were created in seven languages for the participating countries: Arabic, English, Indonesian, Mandarin, Portuguese, French and Spanish.

In order to acquire MacCoins, customers around the world can enter a variety of giveaways with each participating country celebrating the arrival of the currency in its own unique manner. For the campaign, more than 6.2 million MacCoins will be distributed worldwide in over 50 countries, allowing consumers to share, collect and redeem a free Big Mac at participating McDonald’s locations.

Over the 50 years of its distribution, the McDonald’s Big Mac has become globally-recognized and has created a lasting legacy. According to McDonald’s representatives, the menu item’s universality inspired the MacCoin’s creation.

McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook says that the international fast-food retailer “wanted a global celebration as unique as the burger itself. The MacCoin transcends currencies to commemorate our global iconic burger while giving customers all over the world a chance to enjoy a Big Mac on us.”
