Spanish hotel chain Meliá lets guests pay for on-site purchases at restaurants, clothing stores and coffee shops with its new line of wearable tech bracelets. By mid-August of this year, the hotel chain will roll out this initiative at nine locations throughout Spain to create more seamless shopping experiences for vacationers.

When travelers check-in for their resort visits, they are handed wristbands that unlock their guest rooms, easily pay for hotel spa treatments and provides them access to the Meliá-owned Wave House theme park in Magaluf. All purchases are charged to the guests’ rooms. For customer convenience, the wearable tech bracelets wirelessly sync by Bluetooth antennas to the hotel’s mobile app. For family vacationers, Melià’s app allows parents to control certain settings, such as spending limits, on each child guest’s bracelet.

Following Disney and Carnival’s setting the wearable tech trend at their resort locations, Meliá strives to expand upon the product’s experience-enhancing potential. Sarah Ranghai, leader of corporate brands and customer experience at Meliá, explained, “Disney and Carnival were the pioneers. We learned from them and used the tech concept for our own needs. What’s notable is that the complexity of implementing similar solutions may be decreasing. Meliá’s effort is ‘a several hundred thousand euro projects.’”

Unlike its tech bracelet-embracing predecessors, Meliá seeks to expand its wristband payment program, enabling guests to make purchases at participating off-site retailers to create a seamless omnichannel vacation shopping experience. According to those close to the hotel group, if successful, Meliá will roll out these wearable tech bracelets guests at more of their 470 hotels in over 43 countries under various brands.
