eBay developed a way to use the iPhone X camera that will allow shoppers to navigate the site with just their head. The AR-enabled feature is called HeadGaze and uses the advanced iPhone X camera as well as the motion tracking technology provided from ARKit to create a visual cursor that will scroll and click in response to head movements, just as a typical cursor does with the hands.

HeadGaze will track the user’s head movement to determine up and down motions and will respond to lack of movement by making selections on any of the designated buttons. The buttons allow for hands-free product selection, page jumping, scrolling and more, all with simple tilts and turns of the head.

The tech behind HeadGaze has been made available to the public on GitHub.com and eBay has spoken of its implementation in established and future apps. The etailer has also spoken of plans use this technology to track eye motion as well, and of the possibility of blending these two motion tracking capabilities in the future.
