GIPHY’s VR Experience Encourages Creators To Connect And Invent Together

As GIPHY's Director of Design recounts to PSFK, the platform intends for its 3D features to serve as a user-generated community hub for GIF and VR enthusiasts alike, empowering creators to design and explore in more interactive and immersive ways than before

GIPHY has released its newest application known as GIPHY World, where users can access a creative assortment of GIFs and animated stickers, themed around new virtual environments that are designed as destination focal points.

The 3D features allow the user to embark on an enhanced journey through a virtual reality experience, that includes augmented reality components that stem from the GIPHY World AR app, to ensure a heightened animated experience.

But in this manifestation, GIPHY World aims to be more than just a dynamic canvas for users. As Ralph Bishop, Director of Design at GIPHY, tells PSFK, VR doesn’t just have the power to entertain, it’s armed with “the power to connect and transport us.” And so, the activation will serve as user-generated community hub for GIF and VR enthusiasts alike.

“GIPHY World is the first time we have seen the GIPHY API used in a VR application and we believe that artists and creators are ultimately the ones that experiment and standardize with expression in new mediums so we created a tool for them. If you create a tool first then the community will follow.”

In Bishop’s words, “community will ultimately make or break GIPHY World.” Whether it’s creating a customized GIF, or incorporating stickers into a picture or video, GIPHY has introduced new virtual worlds for users of that fledgling community to access, and they encompass an assortment of animated stickers pertaining to a particular themed environment.

These virtual environments include three new settings: a soothing deserted island, a solitary chess room and a spooky cabin in the woods.

Each environment unlocks new opportunities for users to explore and build their custom creations.

Better yet, a Digital Assistant will be available to users should they want to record and document their GIFsanity, and is seen by the company as a way to solve some of the adoption issues VR and AR platforms have  suffered in the past.

“Unless developers have integrated with a social app, chances are that most VR applications are pretty lonely places to hang out. A digital assistant is a person or being that can provide some sort of dialogue or guidance and companionship while also serving up a fun interface for otherwise boring things like saving and opening files. In fact, some of the best VR apps take mundane UI and basic computer operations and rethink it in playful ways and making it tactile.

If brands or VR developers can create really compelling digital assistants on VR platforms then we might have found a killer app that makes it worth adopting. It’s sort of like visiting a store where a sales clerk is 100% dedicated to taking care of you and if a VR app can super-serve me like that I’ll definitely be coming back again,” says Bishop.

GIPHY World aims to give users the opportunity to express their creative side a step further with its new assortment of animated stickers and the ability to enter GIF-ridden worlds, unlocking endless possibilities for users and brands alike (especially as these creations can easily be shared on social media platforms).

“VR gives brands that might never build a real-world product or brick-and-mortar location the ability to create a place that embodies the values of a brand. So I’d say brands should harness their communities and fandoms and express them in new ways on VR. Once they have a community on VR then they should be positioned to gather data to inform that experience,” says Bishop.
