The hospitality company's Motto brand is designed to appeal to younger travelers, offering them lower-cost and flexible accommodations in prime urban areas to compete with alternatives like Airbnb

The American hotel empire Hilton is developing a new series of hotels to reflect the living environment of a hostel. Called Motto, the line aims to blend the luxury that Hilton is known for with the accessibility and convenience of hostels popular among those traveling abroad.

Motto is described as a “micro-hotel with an urban vibe in prime global locations.” While the establishment will not place people in communal areas like more traditional hostels, Motto’s efficient yet private, multi-functional spaces will provide customization options,  including lofted beds or furniture that can be stowed in the wall for maximization of the space, as well as provide the option to have rooms linked if guests are staying and traveling together.

Guests will have the ability to split payments between more than one person at the time of booking, catering to younger groups of travelers. Even more, responding to consumer insight and demand, the brand emphasizes sleep quality for its guests, providing them with premium mattresses, a white noise app and capabilities, sound-absorbing materials and even sleep kits including eye masks, essential oils or vitamin bars.

This flexible and affordable hotel series was inspired by the pressure that the hospitality industry is beginning to feel from lower-cost alternatives like Airbnb. Jon Witter, chief customer officer at Hilton, explains the design behind Motto: “Following extensive market research that focused on consumers’ needs and wants, we discovered the opportunity for a brand that offers travelers a trifecta of centrally located, reasonably priced and less traditional lodging that provide a one-of-a-kind experience.”
