The partnership will let Amex card holders spend their reward points with any merchant that accepts PayPal, increasing their usefulness to customers while also supporting smaller businesses

With the rising popularity of mobile payment platforms, companies are focusing on partnering up in an effort to increase value for clients. PayPal and American Express recently announced a collaboration that aims to expand their customers’ options and services.

The team-up allows for American Express clients to use reward points with any retailer that accepts PayPal. The partnership also allows for Amex card holders to make peer-to-peer Venmo payments via the American Express app.

American Express CEO Stephen Squeri says of the collaboration, “This strategic partnership with PayPal will open up the use of Membership Reward points at more small- and medium-sized businesses than ever and make peer-to-peer payments more seamless for Card members.”

The partnership helps PayPayl’s merchants potentially grow their businesses by offering more payment options, as well as helps American Express customers put their often unused points to use by validating them at new locations.
