As increasing numbers of consumers demonstrate preference for fresh over processed foods, supermarkets are evolving to meet these changing tastes. Northeast supermarket chain Stop & Shop is aiming to better serve modern consumer needs with its remodeled layout for its stores that will focus more on produce as well as provide better in-store technologies for shoppers.

Starting with Hartford, Connecticut as a test market, Stop & Shop will be rolling out several new features, expanding the produce section to include more locally grown selections, offering in-store communal spaces and even debuting fresh-made stations that will prepare poké bowls and tacos. There will also be upgraded technology, like automated grocery orders that can be picked up curbside, a new app that lets customers scan products and purchase them on their phone without waiting online and even digital community boards to share news and events.

“We recognize that our customer is changing, and we’re evolving our entire shopping experience to better serve them,” Stop & Shop President Mark McGowan tells Progressive Grocer. “They’re focused on getting back to their lives, juggling many responsibilities, and we want to make grocery shopping even easier and faster for them. Hartford is the first step in our journey towards repositioning our brand for future success and in helping our communities enjoy better food and better lives.”

The pilot store opened on October 5. If successful, it will be implemented in the franchise’s 400-plus stores over the next few years.
