Online image-collecting site Pinterest is a tool that professional interior designers and novice decorators alike frequently turn to for idea inspiration and organization. Its ability to store and present gathered images together on ‘boards’ provides a way to test out furniture choices, color options or capture a general mood of a space with complimentary reference images. Those idea boards can be shared with clients or vendors and aid in quickly moving the design of a space along.

During the 2018 London Design Festival, Pinterest collaborated with design-centric retailer The Conran Shop to create a real-world version of Pinterest inside the Chelsea flagship store. The project started with an eye-catching window installation made of 1,600 red-topped ceramic pins.

Once inside, people browsing the furniture and accessories in the store encounter special Pinterest Pincode tags attached to hero items. Scanning one of the Pinterest Pincode tags with the camera in the Pinterest App links to curated boards highlighting use ideas and complimentary products assembled by The Conran Shop.

In addition to the scannable tags, Pinterest and Conran partnered with printed-electronics specialist, Thinfilm to assign Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology to hero products around the store. The system allows people to tap their smartphones on a product and have it automatically added to a bespoke ‘Conran Wishlist’.

This collaboration with The Conran Shop is a first-of-its-kind brand partnership for Pinterest. The two hope that the power of Pinterest as a visual resource collector and organizer makes the leap to physical home furnishing stores a natural extension for the service. The ability to assemble room ideas on Pinterest based on products found online as well as from physical showrooms or retailers aims to make the design process less daunting and streamline decision making, closing the gap between virtual and physical browsing.
