Financial Services Group Marshals AR To Help Members Choose A Car

USAA is helping members save time, money and stress by building an augmented reality-based app that lets customers scan cars to find relevant information like price, insurance and similar alternatives

Buying a car can be a complicated experience, a common customer pain point that the latest technology is poised to help ease. USAA, a financial services group that serves active and retired military members and their families, is implementing augmented reality to help its customers collect all the information they need before buying a new vehicle.

The organization developed a standalone car-buying app, currently in beta, that allows users to use their phones to scan cars evaluate prices. The app scans any models made after 2000, and brings up prices, insurance quotes based on the user’s financial profile and information on similar vehicles. The app uses the visual recognition tool from AR tech company Blippar, and is currently being tested with a few hundred members.

The goal of the app is to help USAA members save time, money and stress when finding their next vehicle.”For retail financial services, it’s one of the things that helps people make the best decision; what AR does for us is it gives an opportunity to be earlier in the process of performing a transaction— it’s an opportunity to not be heavy handed, but just give the information to you that will hopefully help you make a more informed decision,” Patrick Kelly, AVP of Digital Product Development at USAA, tells Digiday.
