Grocer Expands U.S. Presence By Building On Local Family-Owned Chain

Germany-based grocer Lidl is increasing its U.S. presence by acquiring local grocery spaces and buidling off of their established community roots, integrating them into its streamlined, no-frills design that enables its low prices

German grocery chain Lidl is setting its sights on expansion on the East Coast of the United States. Lidl U.S. recently acquired the 27 locations of Best Market, a family-owned grocery store chain that operates in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, to help the former widen its stateside presence, having recently made its debut in 2017.

By acquiring Best Market and converting its locations in to the Lidl format, the new parent company is hoping to parlay the already established relationship that local shoppers have with the grocery location and building upon it. Best Market employees in the New Jersey and New York locations will have the option to stay on as Lidl team members at wages similar or better than they were under previous management.

The transition from Lidl to Best Market will begin gradually next year and will be a part of the company’s experimentation with new layouts and floor plans. In its U.S. markets, Lidl will begin constructing smaller stores designed to reduce costs through efficiency. Some will have restaurants attached, and some will use the ground floor exclusively for commercial use.

All of these expansions will add to the 50 stores that Lidl already has established in the United States. The grocer hopes to seamlessly blend local stores with its innovative and efficiency-driven designs to offer customers an optimized discount shopping experience.
