Coffee drinkers can truly grab their drink and go with Costa's reusable, digitally enabled Clever Cup, connecting to a Barclay bPay chip to enable contactless payment

One of the U.K.’s largest coffee chains, Costa, just released a reusable coffee cup that allows for digital payment. This reusable container uses built-in technology that takes on-the-go coffee to the next level, allowing customers cashless and cardless transaction.

Based on existing mobile payment technology, the contactless chip was created by financial group Barclays. Customers can access Barclay’s bPay app to add funds to the cup’s detachable chip. Available for 15 pounds, the contactless payment feature is an incentive for people to purchase these cups and reuse them.

Additionally, this technology can be used at other places that accept contactless payments, though customers will need to carry their mug with them. With less than 1% of coffee cups recycled in the U.K., this reusable cup optimized for convenience is designed to help curb this waste problem.
