"As Seen On IG" is a new pop-up vending machine that lets people "buy" likes, followers, and hashtags to promote an upcoming documentary

Instagram is quickly becoming the top social media platform, so much so that its trends and best practices are becoming a part of our vocabulary. A new pop-up vending machine is highlighting how this social currency is changing how we think about ourselves and our priorities online.

Creative agency Conscious Minds created a “As Seen On IG” vending machine filled with items meant to represent various trends on Instagram. The vending machine is part of a campaign to promote the upcoming documentary Social Animals, which looks at three teenagers looking to achieve Instagram fame. Customers can find boxes of like & likes,” “witty captions,” or “DM sliders”, pay $10 to gain 1000 fake followers, or buy a magic 8 balls to decide which hashtag to use on a post. There are various machines located around Los Angeles and San Francisco, like at the Downtown Ace Hotel and The World Famous Venice Barbershop.

Jonathan Ignatius Green, Social Animals director and Conscious Minds partner says that the vending machine is meant to satirize the very real social currency that these Insta-famous people use to gain attention and followers. “One of the things that struck us while making this film is how there is actually very little difference between how and why teenagers and adults use Instagram,” Green tells Ad Age. “This may be due to the human need to share and communicate, but also because this platform encourages our more adolescent impulses–evaluating our self-worth based on the amount of attention, adoration and even envy we receive from our peers.”

All proceeds from the vending machine will go to the non-profit Reboot & Recover, which focuses on digital addictions and mental health issues surrounding technology.
