Shopify Studios is launching with a series of documentaries about small businesses and will eventually release podcast content as well, helping startups raise their exposure through engaging content

Since 2010, Shopify has helped a number of retailers enhance their business by enabling online payment options. In an effort to expand its services, the company is now entering into television and film production.

Shopify will launch a production studio, called Shopify Studios, with 20 documentaries to start that focus on the stories of small businesses. The company eventually hopes to add additional programming such as podcasts. Shopify's Jason Babel says, “We believe that [entrepreneurial] spirit is inherent and present among us all, whether we realize it or not, and Shopify Studios’ content aims to inspire the next wave of creators and iconoclasts to embrace and manifest the possibilities before them.”

As a payment service, Shopify has been wildly successful, with $82 billion processed on online payments. Creating its own production studio is intended as a way for the company to reinvest some of those dollars and continue to grow in new ways, helping startups creatively cultivate exposure. The documentary series will begin with a feature called And Nowhere Else.
