In Brief

The two major player are combining their strengths to enable healthcare technology and retail innovations designed to improve the future of health care, marshaling Microsoft’s cloud and AI platform alongside Walgreens' customer reach, store locations and outpatient services to make care more accessible and affordable than ever

Technology and software company Microsoft is partnering with pharmacy brand Walgreens to pioneer the future of pharamcy healthcare. The goal is to create a service that is backed by Microsoft’s cloud software, Azure, and Walgreens’ patient information to ultimately provide better care for customers.

The partnership will focus on enabling a connected, consumer-centric healthcare platform, more personalized services, and will also collaborate with payment providers and pharmaceutical manufacturers to offer consumers better health results at more affordable prices. One of the main ways these goals will be reached is by combining the power of Microsoft Azure—Microsoft’s cloud and AI platform—as well as healthcare investments and innovative retail solutions with Walgreens’ customer engagement, store locations, outpatient services and expertise.

This isn’t the first time that Microsoft has partnered with a chain that specializes in every day goods; earlier this year, it partnered with Kroger for a similar project. “Together with Walgreens Boots Alliance, we aim to deliver on this promise by putting people at the center of their health and wellness, combining the power of the Azure cloud and AI technology and Microsoft 365 with Walgreens Boots Alliance’s deep expertise and commitment to helping communities around the world lead healthier and happier lives,” says Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft.
