The Ikea Planning Studio will offer consultation services for Manhattanites as well as shipping, delivery and assembly for an extra fee, part of the retailer's plan to open 30 city-center stores

IKEA‘s first city-center location is coming to Manhattan on April 15, and with it a new planning studio concept for the famous self-assembly furniture corporation: The 999 Third Avenue outlet will focus on small-space solutions and city living for New Yorkers.

The Ikea Planning studio will offer consultations that can be booked through an online platform, to aid city dwellers in designing and arranging their homes, as well as home delivery for an extra fee. To add more convenience, the studio will involve a shift away from IKEA's quintessential DIY ethos, offering assembly and installation services. “We conducted extensive research about city living, and we believe New Yorkers will see their needs reflected [in] this new concept,” said the chief operating officer of IKEA Retail U.S., Leontyne Green Sykes, in a company press release.

The Manhattan launch is meant to complement the other stores in the NY market (Brooklyn, Elizabeth, Paramus and Long Island) with a different approach that considers city logistics, and a lack of storage facilities. Rather than buying and taking the furniture home to assemble, consumers are encouraged to order their products at the store and have them delivered. Walk-ins are accepted, but appointments are encouraged to get the full experience.

The Manhattan location is the first in a project that includes 30 city-center stores opening in the next three years. The Planning Studio will be open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
