L’Oréal is partnering with microbial genomics company uBiome to create hyper-personalized products informed by research on the skin’s bacterial ecosystem

Beauty giant L'Oreal has been at the forefront of the cosmetics market since its inception nearly 110 years ago. At this year's SXSW festival, the brand debuted its latest plan to blend makeup with science: The brand will partner with uBiome, microbial genetics company, to create the next generation of personalized products.

The perhaps unlikely collaboration is intended to better understand the interaction between cosmetics and the body's microbiome, in particular the barrier of bacteria present on the skin's surface. uBiome's CEO, Jessica Richman, explains, “L’Oréal is an ideal partner for uBiome as it has had a strong focus in scientific innovation in this space for years. Their expertise, combined with uBiome’s advanced understanding of the skin microbiome, will allow us to pave the way for the future of personalized skin care.”

Overall, the beauty retailer hopes to leverage key learnings from the microbiome's influence on skin health in creating better products tailored to individual customers' needs: “At L’Oréal, our goal is to advance scientific research and leverage new technologies…allowing deeper levels of personalization,” says Guive Balooch, VP of L’Oréal’s technology incubator.
