The American grocer is testing out a program that offers to fill a pharmacy prescription for $20 worth of free fruits and vegetables

Eating right is as important to one's health as exercise and staying on top of vitals. Supermarket chain Giant Food is looking to help people eat better with its Produce Rx program that offers customers fruits and vegetables with a prescription.

The program will be tested at one of its Washington D.C. locations. Customers in the AmeriHealth Caritas DC managed Medicaid health plan can ask their medical provider for a prescription if they have a diet-related chronic illness. Filling the script at the pharmacy will give them a $20 coupon to use on fresh produce. While the program limits the number of people who can benefit from it, it does grant those in need financial relief in order to enjoy fresh food.

“As a food retailer, we recognize the important role we can play in the access to healthy foods and health education, and the program is certainly a natural fit with our ongoing efforts to support the health needs of the communities we serve,” Giant President Gordon Reid said in a statement. The program will begin on April 24 and run through December 31, and initially will be available for 500 patients, though it's slated for expansion.
