The CEO and CCO of the AI-enabled haircare personalization software explain how it produces free tailored advice and gets smarter as customers use it, harboring the potential to make high-tech haircare mainstream in partnership with Unilever

Finding the right hair products can sometimes feel like an impossible task, whether it's in a drug store or online. The number of choices is simply overwhelming. But thanks to a new partnership between beauty giant Unilever and AI startup HelloAva, there's a new way to find the products that work best for any type of hair type, style or concern: a digital assistant that guides customers through a quiz and then points them to their ideal products.

The relationship with HelloAva began through the Unilever Foundry initiative, which partners with promising startups. HelloAva CEO and co-founder Siqi Mou sees the pairing as a way to make both sides smarter. “By partnering with HelloAva, Unilever will now be able to use their technology to accelerate our own learning curve in the haircare and wider beauty space,” Mou says.

The service, which allows customers to buy their recommended products directly, is available through Unilever's All Things Hair site. A detailed algorithm makes the final choices for each person's recommendations. HelloAva originally launched as a skincare service, which works in almost exactly the same way for skin as it does for hair. After answering a few questions and submitting a photo, customers can walk away with handpicked products and a personalized regime in just a few minutes.

“Recommendations are based on the user's unique hair needs, together with a detailed understanding of the ingredients and function of each product,” says Kailu Guan, co-founder and CCO of HelloAva. “And the best thing is, the more you use it, the smarter HelloAva gets. Over time, the analyzer will be able to make increasingly complex recommendations as the more consumers complete the experience.”

As AI gets smarter, its applications grow wider and wider. With a short quiz and a powerful learning algorithm that works with customers over time, HelloAva hopes to make better haircare accessible to all, and at scale, in partnership with the massive Unilever conglomerate.
