The recent rise of hybrid and remote work has catalyzed the adoption of professional collaboration interfaces, as companies and organizations liaise internally and externally across datasets, personal schedules, team needs, and project deliverables; all with the aim of providing a universal experience for employees regardless of physical location. Integrating new ways of communicating into a single platform that provides for the surfacing and sharing information across text, voice, and video has become a new priority to lessen employee disconnect and other interruptions that result in a loss of productivity. 

Similar needs are arising at home, and on consumers' smartphones, as the level of every-day technology encased in their devices increases at a blistering pace. Hands-free, voice-activated interfaces are lessening the reliance on screens, and streamlining formerly complex processes of task completion. Advances in image-recognition technology are lowering barriers around tasks both small – like shopping for a specific item online – and large, like virtually troubleshooting a piece of machinery; aiding in the consumer lifecycle from discovery to post-purchase service. 

As the ever-evolving, technically sophisticated and digital-first ecosystem begins to transmute the more mainstream elements of daily life, new tools and solutions are being made available to put control and customization back in the hands of the consumer. No-code and low-code programming tools, alongside simplified interfaces and powerful APIs, are making it easy and possible for everyone to access and activate the growing world of connected devices on their own time, and in their own way.

A 2020 study from PYMNTS and Visa estimates that 23 million consumers used voice assistants to make purchases — a 45% increase since 2018 and an 8% gain since 2019.

Improved image-recognition technology has created alternative ways to search, aiding product discovery and information sourcing.

Trends in New Modes of Communication, Collaboration and Customization

Chat-Based Workflows
Text-based communication has become an increasingly important interface for both personal and professional communication. To supercharge the platform, developers are building rich features and toolsets to enable people to complete more tasks directly within the flow of their conversations.

Inspired by the idea of a single, integrated experience for everyone across all of its apps, Google Workspace is helping groups to stay connected and get organized through secure collaboration spaces in Google Chat. From shared calendars, to a Google Sheet of annual budgets and spending, reviewing PTA and sport team assignments within a Doc, or even planning monthly playdates and discussing cooking club themes through Chat, Spaces allows for a real-time view of files and tasks all within a single chat-based workstream. By connecting all of its products within a central point, Google’s G Suite is prioritizing easy access, communication, collaboration and productivity by creating overlapping product views and workflows in place of multiple windows, tabs and browser sessions. 

Voice-Activated Controls
Voice-based controls offer hands-free convenience and ease of use, particularly when attempting to complete complex tasks that might require multiple steps. Enhanced natural language processing and speech to text communication now enables people to dictate messages and speak a broader range of commands within the context of existing workflows to power new levels of productivity.

To enhance its text-based messaging platform and provide teams with a more convenient tool that sits within their already existing workflow, Slack is introducing voice, video and screen recording capabilities. For teams navigating multiple time zones, schedules and projects, these recordings can be shared in place of daily meetings while ensuring status check-ins remain in place. Members can record their own thoughts and contribute feedback on their own time, creating a more flexible work day. Searchable transcripts of each team members’ recordings will also be available, as well as tools within Slack to control the speed of the recording. 

Image-Driven Interface
Advances in image recognition technology and computer vision are transforming mobile cameras into powerful tools for capturing and finding information from the physical world. By taking a photo of nearly any object, users can receive related details, discover and buy similar products based on attributes like color or style, and even extract key data like phone numbers, directions or language to power other functions like calls, maps or translations.

Live Text” means you can now copy and paste text from images. Your iPhone camera can recognize handwritten text, so you can take a pic of the whiteboard after a brainstorming session, copy and paste it into an email, and send it to your team. The system can now scan your photos to spot words and phone numbers inside of them, letting you call a number that you’ve photographed. It will translate speech to other languages in real time.

No-Code Tools
The mainstreaming and increased sophistication of no-code and low-code programming is bringing a new level of customization to connected software and devices. Simplified drag and drop interfaces and powerful APIs enable people to build bespoke tools and automate actions to better meet specific contexts or needs. Alongside this, there is a growing marketplace and community around the design of pre-built templates and ‘recipes’ that users can immediately begin utilizing.

Combining education and entertainment, consumer electronics company Nintendo is encouraging Nintendo Switch players to become game designers within its Game Building Garage. Using a code-free, visual programming interface, guided lessons introduce colorful characters shaped as coding squares called Nodons, which can be selected, linked together and altered based on each game designer's desired actions, obstacles and music. By allowing gamers to share and play their final design alongside friends, the Game Builder Garage provides a tech literate cohort with the building blocks to enjoy a social activity while developing critical thinking and problem solving skill sets.
