The idea started in late 2004 when Salman was helping his niece in math by sending videos of his computer screen as he worked through problems. His family encouraged him to put his lessons on YouTube. Now, Khan Academy lessons encompass everything from history to chemistry and reach over six million unique students each month. The program has attracted backing from the likes of John Doerr, Bill Gates, Eric Schmidt and more.
Sebastian is the CEO and co-founder of Udacity, an online learning platform aimed at democratizing education. Udacity offers courses in technology applicable to the needs of Silicon Valley. By working in conjunction with industry giants like Google, AT&T, Facebook, SalesForce and others, the platform offers “nanodegrees” to students interested in certain topics recognized by these institutions. Udacity has over 160,000 students in 190 countries and is growing to change the future of education by bridging the gap between real-world skills, relevant education and employment. Sebastian is also a part-time research professor advising PhD students on the “Internet of Everything” and related topics.
