Chevrolet Reveals Future Virtual Race Car Powered by a Laser
Designers adapt advanced aerospace ideas for use on the racetrack
The racing world gets its Star Trek Impulse Drive – a Chevrolet powered by a 671-kW laser to provide 900 horsepower worth of thrust.
The most revolutionary and seemingly far-fetched part of this concept is the power unit which Chevrolet specified is a 671-kW laser, powered by a pack of lithium-ion batteries, and an air-powered generator to provide 900 horsepower worth of thrust. Basically, the laser creates powerful shockwaves which in succession, propel the car forward. In Star Trek terms, it sounds like Impulse Drive.
