How Women Are Busting Open The Tech Industry

At PSFK CONFERENCE 2013, a panel of experts discussed how women are reshaping of the tech industry. The panel was comprised of Sonia Sahney Nagar of Pickie, Emily Goligoski of the Mozilla Foundation, Kat Egan of Expolis, Jessica Lawrence of NY Tech Meetup, and moderated by Dory Carr-Harris of PSFK.

The initial idea for the panel stemmed from a understanding that only a tiny fraction of the population (mostly young, educated, white males) is responsible for the creation of today's tech products and for the command of the industry that surrounds them.

The conversation on stage covered a range of topics, including the creative possibilities of a more diverse workforce — what new things could be made with more and different minds on the problem. As well as an in-depth discussion of the specific challenges that currently face the tech industry in terms of how it can be be more open, and how women can work to combat the internal bias against them that exists within this industry.

In addition, the panel looked into the near future to think about what product voids we have in the market today and what kind of new services, platforms devices could be created to fill them.
