Celebrating their 40th birthday, trend setting and lifestyle store Habitat have just launched their “Very Important Products” range across Europe. A brand new range of exclusive wonders designed with some help from the store’s celebrity friends, including the likes of Ewan McGregor, Issey Miyake, Daft Punk, Paul Smith, Kristen Scott and Deepak Chopra. Outstanding designs consist of Daft Punk’s low black glass table, Manolo Blahnik’s Shoehorn and Carla Runi’s Chair hammock.

  1. I’m not saying that the VIP collection isn’t fabulous. It is–especially the Daft Punk light table and Manolo’s amusingly meta shoe horn–but it’s not exactly a new idea. So many places invite celebrities to guest-design furniture or items. It works well with things like sneakers, but it gets to the point where it’s boring, especially when the designs themselves are uninspired (paging Paul Smith’s hanger).

Far more interesting, IMHO, would be a site where normal people could design products and distribute the designs to friends via e-mail for promotion and purchase. After all, it’s arguable that consumers are more interested in keeping up with their friends’ tastes than with that of celebrities.

Just a random thought thrown out there. Keep up the good work.
