New York Begins To Regulate Urban Spam

By Piers Fawkes on August 27, 2006

New York has begun to regulate ‘advertecture’ – the practice of clothing buildings with ads, NY! reports:

New regulations took effect Friday, requiring companies to register larger-than-life billboard advertisements with the Department of Buildings. Under the new rules, companies have 60 days to register billboards planned for buildings within 900 feet of a main highway or 200 feet of a park.

The goal is to limit the proliferation of signs, which have increased significantly over the past decade, causing what the DOB calls unsightly and potentially unsafe situations.
