There’s been some big sections of stage truss being assembled near the north end of Union Square park. Last night we found out what it was for.

Target and celebrated Dutch designer
Tord Boontje have collaborated on Bright Nights, opening today(Dec 4th), to transform
New York City’s Union Square Park footpath into an incredible interactive
lighting experience.  Through the use of cutting-edge technologies, Boontje’s
signature forest creatures and iconic seasonal designs will ‘play’ with
visitors — moving towards them, darting, spinning and even floating away.

Patterns are projected on the ground and monitored by motion sensors. When you walk into the screen area, the objects either move away from you or bunch up around you in the shape of a circle. Dogs seem particularly freaked out by it, but it’s pretty cool. Bright Nights is free and open to the public from Monday, December 4
through Tuesday, December 26.  It is open nightly until 11:00 p.m.
