Get Smart for $99

Smart USA will begin taking reservations
for its Smart ForTwo compact car, destined for sale in the US next year on April 2. The Reservation Program will be open to all smart ‘Insiders‘ for $99 down.

The "Pure" entry-level model will start at $12,000. A better-equipped
"Passion" model at $14,000 will add a stereo system and other
convenience features. The convertible is only available in "Passion"
guise, for $17,000.

There’s been the occasional Smart spotted on the streets of Manhattan.  We documented the brand exhibit at 340 Madison way back in November of 2005. Cities make obvious sense but I wonder how out of scale they’ll look cruising down a Midwest interstate next to a semi-truck.
