The second album of the Arctic Monkeys has outsold the rest of the Top 20 records in the UK chart put together. On its first day of release this week, Favourite Worst Nightmare outsold Avril Lavigne’s The Best Damn Thing, by ten copies to one.

The Sun thinks that ‘the record industry will be breathing a sigh of relief after a slow start to the year.’

We beg to differ.

  1. The problems in the music business are far bigger than any 1 band can solve.

  2. Isn’t it interesting that the biggest selling album of the year was one that leaked out onto the internet weeks early so that nearly everyone had heard it already?
But ofc the music industry still has its head in the sand.

  3. I don’t hold out much hope for the record industry but this one statistic doesn’t really prove the case does it?

The release of albums has changed over the years and the strategy has moved to ensuring maximum sales in week 1 so the release of any big album is arguably more likely to outweigh the rest of the chart than used to be the case.

That said, there have been other cases of acts dominating the charts – throughout 74/75, Elton John accounted for 25% of all album sales in the US.

This story is really just another part of the Arctic Monkey’s promotion.
