Future Fashion White Papers

By Orli Sharaby on December 13, 2007

Earth Pledge has just published Future Fashion White Pages, a nearly 300-page book of essays that seeks to make sense of the current and future landscape of sustainable fashion design. Contributors to the book include Diane von Furstenberg, Barneys New York’s Julie Gilhart, Steven Kolb of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Liz Claiborne Inc.’s Tim Gunn and models Shalom Harlow and Elettra Wiedemann.

From the Amazon description:

Earth Pledge’s newest publication, FutureFashion White Papers, is a collection of essays by a diverse and international group of contributors. Designers, manufacturers, farmers, professors, models, business owners and creative directors add their experiences and wisdom, producing a unique and multifaceted view of the apparel and textile industries. The book not only proposes solutions to environmental problems, but addresses the financial outcomes of sustainable practices and offers individual business perspectives.
FutureFashion White Papers aims to educate all people interested in sustainable fashion and offers safe environmental practices for the industries and consumers. It is an invaluable and ground-breaking resource that proves how style and sustainability can coexist.

The book was released in conjunction with a fashion show on December 9 in Kuala Lumpur, the first notable eco-conscious fashion event ever in Asia. The show featured some clothing made from environmentally friendly fabric piña — fiber made from the leaves of a pineapple and dyed with jackfruit — which apparently is readily available in Asia and will be added to Earth Pledge’s sustainable materials library. We can’t really locate much information about the material, but after learning recently of bamboo’s shortcomings as an eco-friendly fabric, we’d be interested if anyone has any insight about piña.
