The Science Barge: Radically Efficient Urban Farming

By Dan Gould on May 13, 2008

PSFK got the chance to spend an eye opening afternoon aboard NY Sunwork’s Science Barge (thanks to Good Magazine). Using a combination of efficient techniques the Science Barge grows more produce with less resources than a traditional farm, and with little or no waste. Hydroponics and vertical farming methods are used to maximize space and all electricity is generated aboard the ship using a combination of solar, wind, and biodiesel. Water is captured with a special system on the roof of the greenhouse, or pumped out of the river and filtered. With additional projects in the works including roof top green houses, Sunworks is illustrating just how much is possible with urban farming.
