Urban Tumbleweeds

2,663 plastic shopping bags are used every second in America. That’s pretty outrageous. New York based design studio MSLK is creating an art instillation called “Urban Tumbleweeds” that will visualize this rapid fire consumption. The piece will consist of a .5 mile long multicolored chain of bags to represent this brief span of time. MSLK plans on exhibiting the chain at Burning Man 2008 and is still taking donations of clean bags till June 30th.

  1. .5 miles…that’s it? Come on, I’m sure we can up our consumption a bit to make that chain of bags a little longer.

It’s a full mile from the Man (placed in center of a circular city at Burning Man) to the outer ring of city. Why not try and wrap the chain all the way around the city…that would be impressive!

  2. Agreed. I think it would have a much greater impact on an urban area instead of leading-edge folks at Burning Man. I’m doubt they need much preaching about the evils of excessive plastic and consumption.

  3. Actually looks quite picturesque…
