Terminology: “Broken Britain”

By Piers Fawkes on July 29, 2008

“Broken Britain” is a term that the Sun newspaper in the UK is using the describe the supposed lawlessness of the youth there. If you read the tabloids it’s as if Britain has decided to skip going down the pub for some binge drinking and gone straight into the fighting part of the night (or day). With knives. Or that’s how they’d like us believe. This phrase was used in the headline “Broken Britain at its worst” and the article reads:

LAWLESS thugs take turns to boot an unconscious man in the head – while a teenage GIRL causally rifles his pockets. The five feral thugs are seen battering the defenceless victim to the floor in the street in this sickening CCTV footage, before kicking his head like a football.
