Staff at Clive Brook Volvo in Yorkshire, England, noticed a number of customers bringing bicycles with them when they dropped their cars off for service instead of choosing the complimentary loan cars. The dealership decided to start a program offering customers a choice of a loaner bicycle or a loaner car when they drop off their Volvo for service.
The dealership hopes that offering bicycles will motivate customers to think about green transportation and getting some fresh air and exercise. But the program could also translate to some cost savings for reduced maintenance on the loaner fleet and lower insurance costs.
There could be some hidden dangers and benefits to the program as well. For instance a customer who falls in love with the bike and never comes back for the car. Or they just might become the world leader in bike rack sales for Volvo.
