Danger Mouse has a new project out called “Dark Night of the Soul“. It’s full of guest stars, including Frank Black, Iggy Pop and The Flaming Lips. EMI decided to not release the album due to “legal issues”, so Danger Mouse went ahead and started selling them anyway. Limited to a run of 5000, each copy is hand-numbered, and comes with a poster, and a 100 + page book with photographs by David Lynch. This package will cost you $50, but to skirt the legal situation with the record label, it only comes with a blank CD. Buyers are encouraged to find the music “by whatever means” and fill the disc up themselves. If you want to check it out, NPR is streaming the whole thing here.

This is such a smart idea – the target audience aren’t going to have trouble finding the album (it’s all over the popular sites I imagine) and this is typical Dangermouse.
