Tracking Sex Offenders via iPhone

Tracking Sex Offenders via iPhone

By Janice Chow on August 4, 2009

The developers at ThinAir Wireless have created an iPhone app that tracks sex offenders in your local area. The Offender Locator App uses the iPhone’s built-in GPS to pinpoint the user’s location and provides a map that lists where the offenders are located. Tapping on one of the ‘pins’ dropped on to the map pops up a photograph of the offender, as well as their address, date of birth, and list of convictions.

This app could come in handy if you’re planning a trip alone, into an unfamiliar area. Users are able to search by typing in a street address to generate a list of convicted sex offenders in the local area.

Tracking of this kind isn’t a sure fire solution to preventing crime, but it can offer peace of mind for those who are curious about their surroundings.
